The ZOOM MACHINE

A MAME based arcade cabinet I made with Kate in the year of 2003, and also, the year of 2004.

The bezel encompasses the range of space between the marquee and control panel. It is often constructed from glass or plexiglass. The bezel typically displays artwork particular to an arcade machine's current rom chip and game board. This artwork is usually not permanent, due to the fluid lifespan of cabinets - which almost never spend their existence as a single game. This page will deal with a bezel which is intended as a static fixture.

I used 3/16" glass that was 25 7/8" long by 25 3/4" wide. I masked off the square hole through which the tv would shine and spray painted the backside of the glass with green spray paint. When flipped over the bezel had a professional, glossy shine.

I felt at first like the bezel was dull. I thought that it needed a lightening bolt. But i soon grew to like it. No lightening bolt required.

Well, I don't know if I mentioned this before, but the brother-in-law of Daniel, this guy I work with, has a of couple old, gutted machines in his backyard. I plan on purchasing these machines, and using them in accordance with the powers of good, and or, greyskull.

Update: that was five years ago. The guy wanted way too much money for those cabs. Nope!

If you decide to go with the spray painted glass method make sure to cover the paint with duct tape to protect it from scratches. Make sure it's dry though!

Just a quick note. I bought three pieces of 1/8" glass from Lowes, and they all broke. 1/8" glass is too flimsy when you're working with this kind of size. Go with 3/16" or greater.
